In order to facilitate historical and genealogical research, students from the University of Alabama Honors College have cataloged every grave at Marion Cemetery.
Housing a large collection of 19th-century gravestones, the Marion Cemetery could contain the missing link to any West Alabamian family saga. Also containing burials from the Civil War, Marion’s variety of cemeteries play an important role in preserving the history of Perry County.
Relatives to those buried in Marion can pay respects to their ancestors at the Marion Cemetery or a smaller cemetery behind St. Wilfred’s Episcopal Church. In addition, Heard Cemetery is an important part of the Marion community and contains several important gravesites, including the gravesite of voting rights activist Jimmy Lee Jackson.
